GIVING TO UMBC
Frequently Asked Questions

How do I support UMBC with...

Other FAQs

Checks/Credit Card Gifts
The most common gift made to UMBC is an outright gift of cash in the form of a check or credit card payment.

Checks should be made payable to the UMBC Foundation and mailed along with a completed gift form to:

UMBC Annual Fund
Office of Institutional Advancement
UMBC
1000 Hilltop Circle
8th Floor Administration Building
Baltimore, MD 21250

You can use your Master Card, Visa, Discover or American Express to make a secure online gift. If you prefer, you may print and complete the gift form and mail it to the above address or fax it to 410-455-1096.

Matching Gifts
If you or your spouse works for one of more than 900 employers who match contributions to higher education, your gift dollars may be doubled or tripled. To see if your company participates, search here or ask your human resources department. If you have questions about matching gifts, please e-mail Sandra Dzija, Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, or call 410-455-2210.

Securities
The best stocks to donate are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. Even if it is stock you wish to keep in your portfolio, by giving us the stock and using cash to buy the same stock through your broker, you will have received the same income tax deduction but will have a new, higher basis in the stock.

You can easily make a gift of stocks online through the University System of Maryland Foundation in which you designate UMBC as the recipient. For more information, please e-mail Kim Robinson, Director of Capital Campaigns and Donor Relations, or call 410-455-3700.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts play in important role in maintaining UMBC's financial commitments and ensuring that future generations will continue to achieve excellence. The most common planned giving option is making the University one of the beneficiaries in your will or in a revocable trust. Other examples of planned gifts include:

• Charitable Gift Annuity
• Charitable Remainder Trust
• Charitable Remainder Unitrust
• Charitable Lead Trust
• Life Estate Agreement

For additional information on planned giving, e-mail Kim Robinson, Director of Capital Campaigns and Donor Relations, or call 410-455-3700.

Gifts-in-Kind
A gift-in-kind is a gift of personal property, or in other words, something that is tangible. Books, artwork, software and equipment are a few examples of gifts-in-kind, which can be valuable resources to our students. Please contact Kim Robinson at 410-455-3700 if you would like additional information or have a potential gift-in-kind item.

How do I make a credit card gift?

You can make a secure online gift using your credit card or call Donna Garland, Gift Processor, at 410-455-3702.

Who calls alumni and parents?

We have hired an outside firm with extensive experience in higher education to contact our alumni and parents. This is a cost effective way of reaching as many alumni and parents as possible each year.

When do you call alumni and parents for contributions?

We make the majority of our calls between October and December. During the spring, we begin making follow-up calls to individuals we were unable to contact in the fall.

How long does it take to get a receipt?
It normally takes one week, but during peak seasons from December to January and June to July please allow up to three weeks.

I haven't received a gift receipt or need to correct my gift receipt. What do I do?

Please contact Donna Garland at 410-455-3702.

How do I reach a member of the Alumni & Development staff?
Please feel free to contact any member of the staff with questions or ideas for improving the alumni experience at UMBC. We would love to hear from you!
