Dr. Ana Maria Schwartz
Chair of Modern Languages and Linguistics
Since beginning her teaching career at UMBC in 1984, Ana Maria Schwartz has gone above and beyond in accommodating the needs of Latino students. Beyond her teaching schedule, she has been a driving force behind the Hispanic/Latino Student Union (of which she serves as faculty advisor) and has assisted students with limited English proficiency by creating and teaching Spanish for Spanish Speakers (Spanish 304). In addition, she chaired the national Heritage Languages in America conference in 2002.
A native of Cuba, Schwartz has found it especially rewarding being able to relate to the ever-growing Latino community at UMBC. “My history as a Cuban who migrated to this country as a teenager makes me feel a special closeness to my students’ experiences. My association with Latino students through Spanish 304 and the HLSU is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do at UMBC.”
